When I was little, I wanted to walk without making a sound, because the noise of footsteps seemed crude to me, oblivious—like someone walking without realizing they are walking, like someone walking while dragging their body along. I was already born with the idea of disappearing, of stepping aside.

Today, my wife gets startled when she finds me around the house because she never hears me coming.
